The Motivation

When I started writing this book I would never have described myself as an author.  Sure, I had been blogging for several years but that adjective never seemed to fit.

I am late to the writing game and I have a lot to learn - but I'm having fun. After years of working with engineers and tradespeople - being a flakey artist is a really nice change of pace.

So why write a book about some of the most horrible experiences in your life?

I have shared the basics of our story many times - but usually in short 10 - 15-minute intervals. If I am asked to speak at a public event, that is usually the maximum time I get to share a story that could easily go much longer. I always felt a little short-changed that I couldn't go into details on some topics.

Using a book as a platform has given me an opportunity to tell our story the way I want to tell it. To tell it honestly and with minimal editorializing. Many experiences that I have never shared before.

One of the key motivators for taking on this project was a feeling of incompleteness. A feeling that Susan and I had on several occasions when we struggled for ways to express gratitude and words never seemed to measure up. There are literally hundreds of people involved in the creation and survival of our family. My sincere hope is that these people could read this book and see the role they played in our lives. For those people - this book was written as our sincere thanks.
